BFT Action--May 2019

May 22nd Statewide Day of Action

We encourage all members to join BFT, CFT, CTA and community members across the state for a Statewide Day of Action in Sacramento on May 22nd. This is a critical time to show our State Legislature and Governor that education must be fully funded. Additionally, there are important bills being considered to reform regulations on charter schools. BFT is providing transportation throughout the day and anyone is welcome. CFT will provide lunch.

We still have some spaces left on our buses and hope you can ride with us. Buses leave at various times throughout the day and all return at 6 pm from the Capitol. We already have over 250 people signed up to take a bus to Sacramento!

Sign up to participate in the May 22nd Day of Action here.

Thank You for Participating in Teachers Across Berkeley
Thank you to all the BFT Members who participated in Teachers Across Berkeley on April 30th. All sites participated and we were able to put up flyers in all corners of the city.

If you see a placard in a window, thank them for supporting teachers!

May 30th Membership Meeting
There will be a BFT Membership Meeting on May 30th at the Berkeley Adult School at 4:00 pm. If there is a Tentative Contract Agreement, the BFT Negotiations Team will present the agreement and ratification voting will being. If there is no Tentative Agreement, we will discuss next steps in our Contract Campaign.

Get involved in your union: Be a BFT Organizer or a Teachers of Color Network Facilitator
You will receive announcements for two different BFT Organizer positions for 2019-2020 by email and in your mailbox.

The BFT Organizer works with CFT staff and BFT officers to implement the political and electoral parts of the BFT strategic plan, including mobilization for local and state electoral fights, recruit members to volunteer for events and be a BFT liaison to city governing bodies and commissions. The BFT Organizer also works with Site Reps to maintain high membership and represents BFT on District committees. You can find the application here.

The Teachers of Color Network is a group, organized by BFT, that works to improve the recruitment, hiring, support, and retention of teachers of color in BUSD. They also work together on the all-important goals of self-care and building community. Being a TOCN Facilitator is a great chance for BFT members to help serve their colleagues and do fun, important work! You can find the application here.

Applications for these positions are due to BFT by May 24th.
