BFT Action--May 2017
Thank you to all BFT members who participated in May 1st & May 3rd Actions!

On May 1st, BFT members at school sites across the district organized and participated in "walk in" events to demonstrate solidarity with our immigrant students and communities. We got great coverage on Berkeleyside--check it out! And on May 3rd, more than 100 BFT members mobilized to the BUSD School Board meeting in support of increasing prep time for 1st-3rd grade teachers, who currently only have one prep period per week. A big thank you to all members who participated in and helped organize these actions!

BFT Election Ballots Coming Soon to a Mailbox Near You!

BFT Executive Officer Election ballots will be distributed on Thursday, May 18th to all members. The Executive Officers are the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Ballots are due back to the BFT office by 5:00PM on Wednesday, May 31st.

Make sure you vote!

Get involved in your union: be a Site Rep, an Organizer, or a Teachers of Color Network Facilitator
Nomination forms for BFT Site Rep positions will be distributed this week to all members. Being a Site Rep is a great way to get involved in your union--you're part of one of the most important decision-making body in the union, the Executive Board. As a Site Rep, you become a leader at your school site, helping your colleagues with contractual and quality-of-work issues. Nomination forms are due back to the BFT office by May 23rd--best to scan them into an email to

You will also receive announcements for 2017-2018 BFT Organizers and Teachers of Color Network Facilitators by email. The Organizing Team works on our contract campaigns, on social justice issues in our district, on community events, and on statewide political campaigns. It's a great opportunity for anyone who wants to get active in making a difference!

The Teachers of Color Network is a group, organized by BFT, that works to improve the recruitment, hiring, support, and retention of teachers of color in BUSD. They also work together on the all-important goals of self-care and building community. Being a TOCN Facilitator is a great chance for BFT members to help serve their colleagues and do fun, important work!

Applications for the Organizing Team and the Teachers of Color Network Facilitator positions will be due back to BFT by May 30th. More information on the announcements, coming soon!

Sanctuary City Task Force Panel Discussion

Berkeley City College, Room 431
All BFT members are invited to a panel discussion moderated by Mayor Jesse Arreguin that will dive deeper into how we can ensure everyone is safe in our community, and legally frame sanctuary policy in our schools, congregations, and city spaces (libraries, businesses, non-profits, city buildings, etc.).
Break out groups will follow. Panelists include:
Reverend Deborah Lee, Senior Program Director, Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity
Linnea Nelson, Education Equity Attorney, ACLU
John Viola, Legal Observer, National Lawyers Guild
If you attend the panel discussion, wear your BFT t-shirt or hoodie!
Powerful Summer Professional Development Opportunity!

The Mills Teacher Scholars Summer Institute runs from June 21-23. During this workshop you will get a chance to learn about how to engage in deep inquiry around your practice, plus learn concrete strategies to bring back to your school to strengthen your collaboration time with colleagues. I know that deepening adult learning is important to you (especially around issues of equity and teacher leadership), and I think you would really enjoy and benefit from this experience. If you could come with a colleague or two (or a department) - it's even better! There is a discount for groups of 3 or more from the same school.  Two PD credits are also available.

Deadline to apply is June 1st.

Are You Interested in a Reduced Workload Leave, aka a "Willie Brown" Leave?
A Reduced Workload Leave (RWL) allows a teacher to work part-time but still receive BUSD contributions to STRS and benefits as though they were working full-time. To be eligible, a teacher must be at least 55 years old and have worked in a certificated position for at least 10 years, with the last 5 years full-time. Teachers can take RWL up to 0.50FTE under state law, and the deadline for notifying BUSD HR is July 15, 2017. For more information, check out our Reduced Workload Leave FAQ or email BFT President Cathy Campbell at
REMINDER: Please Do NOT “Rate” Subs in Aesop
When you are absent and your class has a substitute teacher, you may get an email from Aesop asking for feedback on your sub.  Please DO NOT use this function to express concerns.  Please see your administrator with any concerns.  Whenever possible, please also contact the sub directly.
Don't Forget Course Approval!

If you plan to take summer coursework to move over on the salary schedule and increase your compensation, you must submit a BUSD course approval request no later than two weeks after the start of the course. The credits you earn will NOT count towards salary advancement unless you get prior approval. See our FAQ on the subject for more details.

Interested in a Job Share?
If you are a K-5 teacher interested in a job share for 2017-2018, please contact BFT at 549-2307 or so we can connect you with other teachers seeking job shares!
Elizabeth Warren Coming to Berkeley!
On Wednesday, May 31st, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren will be holding a 2018 Senate campaign fundraiser in Berkeley. The location is still TBD, but we encourage any member who can to attend. Tickets are available here--they're steep but it's worth it if you've got the money!
Voluntary Transfer Rights in BFT/BUSD Contract
The BFT/BUSD contract provides teachers the right to request a voluntary transfer to an open position at a different school so long as as they have a positive evaluation and meet certain criteria (e.g. certification, credential, minimum years experience, specialized training, etc.). If you have questions about how to make use of your rights in the area please contact BFT President Cathy Campbell at or 549-2307.
